The Conference Attack Surface: Holes in Your Threat Model
Most conference security guides tell you the same things: update your firmware, use a VPN, don't plug into random USB ports. That advice isn't wrong. It's just incomplete in a way that matters.
The standard playbook treats conferences as environments where existing threats are amplified. That's true, but it misses the more important dynamic: conferences actively generate new attack surface that didn't exist before you arrived. Your attendance itself becomes intelligence. Your badge, your conversations, your physical proximity to other holders all produce data points that persist long after you leave Denver.

Conferences Create Targeting Data
Two teenagers from California were recently charged with a targeted home invasion in Scottsdale, Arizona. They showed up at a crypto holder's residence dressed as delivery drivers, carrying duct tape and a 3D-printed firearm. The attack was orchestrated by individuals the teens had never met in person. Someone, somewhere, had identified the victim as a significant holder and knew approximately how much they controlled.
The targeting data that enabled that attack came from the same ecosystem you interact with daily. Exchanges store your balances and identity. RPC providers log your IP address. Block explorers correlate your wallets. All of this data is aggregated, sold, and sorted. Conference attendance adds another layer: it's public, it's concentrated, and it broadcasts "I hold cryptocurrency" to anyone paying attention.
ETHDenver will draw over 25,000 attendees. The event is photographed, recorded, and posted across social media in real time. Badge scans, side event RSVPs, and social posts all generate a dataset linking your identity to the crypto ecosystem. That dataset doesn't expire when the conference ends. It becomes part of the targeting profile that exists on you indefinitely.
The operational implication is straightforward: your presence at a crypto conference is itself a security decision, and it should be treated as one. That doesn't mean you shouldn't attend. It means you should understand what your attendance produces and take steps to limit it.
The Social Engineering Environment
We talk about social engineering as though it's an attack vector you can identify in real time if you're sufficiently vigilant. The reality is closer to the opposite. Social engineering works precisely because it exploits the same cognitive patterns as genuine human interaction. At a conference, those patterns are running at full capacity. Everyone is meeting strangers. Everyone is exchanging contact information. Everyone is open to the next conversation.
Earlier this year, someone impersonating a Bankless podcast organizer sent a direct message inviting a "conversation about your Web3 journey." The message was polished, low-pressure, and referenced a legitimate brand. It was entirely fabricated. The attack would have progressed from rapport-building to a request to download "interview software" or click a scheduling link, both common vectors for credential theft and malware.
That attempt was caught because the profile didn't hold up under a second look. Many don't get a second look. At a conference, the hit rate is even higher because the context validates the interaction. Someone approaches you at an afterparty and asks what you're building. Someone offers to introduce you to a protocol team. Someone suggests a collaboration and shares a link. Each of these is a perfectly normal conference interaction and also a perfectly normal social engineering entry point.
The defense here isn't heightened suspicion of every conversation. That's cognitively unsustainable and counterproductive. The defense is reducing the blast radius of compromise. If someone does get access to your device or credentials during the conference, how much damage can they actually do? That question is answered by your architecture, not your vigilance.
Security Fatigue Is the Real Vulnerability
Every conference security guide adds items to a list. Disable Bluetooth. Use a VPN. Check for skimmers. Cover your screen. Don't share your PIN. Don't use public USB. Don't discuss your holdings.
Each item is individually reasonable. Collectively, they create a cognitive burden that competes with the reason you're at the conference in the first place. The people most likely to follow every item on the list are also the people most likely to experience security fatigue over the course of a five-day event. By day three, compliance degrades. By the closing party, most of those practices have been quietly abandoned.
This isn't a discipline problem. It's a design problem. We learned this from conversations with holders managing significant onchain wealth. The consistent request wasn't for more security knowledge. It was for less security overhead. One user articulated it clearly: everything he needs to worry about should fit on half a page. If it doesn't, the system is too complex to maintain consistently, and too complex to hand to a spouse if something happens to him.

If your security posture depends on you making correct decisions under fatigue, distraction, and social pressure over five consecutive days, it will fail. The question isn't whether you'll make a mistake. It's whether your architecture limits the consequences when you do.
The Continuity Problem Nobody Mentions
Here's the scenario no conference security guide addresses: you're in Denver, three time zones from home. Your phone dies, gets stolen, or gets seized at a TSA checkpoint on the way back. You can't access your authenticator app. You can't reach your hardware wallet. You can't execute the recovery procedure you set up six months ago because you don't remember the details and the instructions are on a device you no longer control.
Now extend that scenario: what if something happens to you physically while traveling? An accident, a medical emergency, a situation you didn't plan for. Does anyone in your life know how to access your holdings? Could your spouse, your business partner, or your attorney reconstruct your security setup from what they currently have access to?
Most holders haven't tested this. The honest answer for most is no.
If your security setup can't survive your temporary or permanent absence, it has a single point of failure, and that point of failure is you. Conference travel is one of the few moments where this risk is genuinely elevated, and it's worth stress-testing before you leave.
Practically, this means: write down the minimum information someone would need to recover access to your holdings if you couldn't assist them. Keep it to half a page. Store it somewhere your designated person can reach. If you can't do this, your setup is more fragile than you think.
Structural Defenses vs. Behavioral Checklists
The standard security advice for conferences is almost entirely behavioral: things you should do, habits you should maintain, decisions you should make correctly in real time. Behavioral defenses have an inherent ceiling. They depend on sustained attention, consistent execution, and the absence of the exact conditions that conferences create (fatigue, distraction, social pressure, unfamiliar environments).
Structural defenses work differently. A time delay on transaction execution doesn't require you to be vigilant. It works whether you're paying attention or not. A guardian who can pause suspicious activity doesn't depend on you noticing the activity first. Geographic distribution of signing authority doesn't fail because you left a device in a hotel room.
The question worth sitting with before ETHDenver isn't "am I following all the security advice?" It's "if I follow none of it for one careless hour, what's the worst that happens?"
If the answer to that question is catastrophic loss, the problem isn't your behavior. It's your architecture.
What Actually Matters
We won't pretend this section doesn't exist in other guides. But the framing matters. These aren't items on a compliance checklist. They're decisions that reduce the structural exposure of traveling to a crypto conference with access to significant value.
Reduce your travel footprint to essentials. Not because a guide told you to, but because everything you carry is an asset that can be compromised and a liability if lost. A secondary device with minimal credentials has a smaller blast radius than your primary machine with active sessions to every exchange and protocol you use.
Separate your signing authority from your person. If you're a multisig signer, consider temporarily increasing the signature threshold while traveling. The goal: no single point of compromise, including you under duress, should be sufficient to execute a transaction. This is the structural defense that behavioral advice can't replicate.
Test your continuity plan before departure. Can someone else recover access if you can't help them? Does the information they need exist in a form they can actually use? If not, you're carrying a single point of failure across state lines.
Treat your conference attendance as public information and act accordingly. Minimize the correlation between your identity and your holdings. Remove branded merchandise, cover hardware wallet logos, and exercise discretion about what you discuss and with whom.
